Major: Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction: Reading
What inspired you to pursue your master’s at Concordia University-Portland?
As a full-time middle school teacher, I needed the flexibility of an online degree program. Also, I wanted a program that is housed within a reputable, regionally accredited university. As an aspiring Reading Specialist, I looked for a university that offered a concentration in Reading. Of course, the bonus is that Concordia’s program can be completed in a year.
What does being awarded this scholarship mean to you?
I’m incredibly grateful to have an opportunity to pursue a graduate degree with very few out-of-pocket expenses. Out of many applicants, I was chosen, and that means a great deal to me. Consequently, I’ve chosen to pay it forward by volunteering as a GED reading instructor at a local learning center for women.
Describe your experience so far in the master’s program, what are some aspects of the program that you enjoy the most?
I have had very positive experiences thus far. The coursework has been rigorous, and the community has been rewarding. The course, Community of Learners, was a gift! As an urban educator, I learned so much that is applicable to the student population I serve.
Would you recommend the program? Why or why not?
Yes, I would recommend Concordia University-Portland. I am confident that upon completion of my degree program, I will be prepared to transform society by improving the literacy skills of children and adults.
