Student Scholarship Spotlight: A Candidate Delivered Straight to Concordia Portland's Online MEd Program
John Heilman is a student in Concordia University-Portland’s online Master of Education program. Heilman, who lives in Ann Arbor, Michigan, received a Concordia Portland scholarship to help fund his pursuit of an advanced degree.
Why did you choose the Concordia Portland online master of education program?
“I delivered pizzas while I was completing my undergraduate degree and I would often deliver pizzas to Concordia students at the Ann Arbor campus. I was always curious about the university and impressed by the beauty of its campus and the friendliness of its students.
“When I was shopping around for a master’s degree program, I came across the program at Concordia. I immediately recognized the name of the university but what I did not know is that there is a Concordia campus in Portland, Oregon. To me it seems fitting that I now have degrees from Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti and the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and soon from Concordia, which is right between the two (CU-Ann Arbor that is).”
What does being awarded a scholarship for Concordia Portland online students mean to you?
“Without the financial support that this scholarship represents, I would not have been able to enroll in this program. It is a great honor for me and I feel very fortunate. I am proud of this achievement but also humbled by the fact that CU has placed their confidence in me. I know that this degree will open doors for me in the future that were once closed.”
What do you like most about the online program?
“I love the convenience of the program, the online interaction with my peers, and the insight and academic support of the professors.”
Would you recommend the Concordia Portland online master degree program to other educators?
“I would definitely recommend this program to anyone looking for a quality education with the convenience of online learning all from a reputable school with a caring and knowledgeable staff.”
How do you describe yourself to other educators?
“As a high school librarian, who considers technology integration as an area of expertise.”
