Education Leadership and Management

By The Room 241 Team March 9, 2013

People who understand education leadership become successful school administrators. Often they will pursue a MEd to get the foundation for the business and administrative responsibilities. They will then get additional education in the areas that allow them to excel as leaders in the school system.

The leadership roles allow one to create work environments in the institution that are collaborative and grow the staff professionally. This education also provides the tools to be able to effectively evaluate classrooms and programs and make recommendations for changes. In this era of education, leadership means knowing how to incorporate all of the technology available for the benefit of the student, and teachers.

Here are some of the core areas that one can expect from a master’s degree program focused on leadership.

Leadership ethics

This consists of learning about the values within the community and educational institutions. Knowing what is important to the teachers, parents, students, and school administrators allows the development of programs and work environments that meet the community’s needs.

Learning theory

There are various ways that people learn and this describes the principles of learning, starting with the biological and physiological influences. A good understanding of learning theory helps to define those approaches most effective for the students. This is the reverse of the traditional classroom approach where one technique is presented and students are helped to get the most from it. Using different techniques that students readily respond to will help them even more in their education careers.

Learning diversity

This is about identifying all of the cultural, economic, and social elements in a community which contribute to their education vision. This allows a leader to know where they can introduce changes that will be accepted by the community to create an even better experience for their students.

Educational research

Most school programs don’t teach the effective use of research in education. This knowledge can help develop programs that introduce research to students and give them opportunities to use it throughout their education.

Current education trends

A real leader in education will know how to keep up with the latest trends in teaching and resources. They also know how to introduce elements into their programs and teaching environments to help the education process. It’s not enough to know about new technology or teaching methods. One must also know how to combine them with the existing structure to help people adopt them into their own classrooms and lessons.

Education and the law

This gives the educator the knowledge of how the laws in the U.S. affect schools, staff, and students. The issues of safety and privacy have become very important to school districts and laws are evolving that address them. There are also numerous laws at the state and federal level that address which students get what type of education. This background helps the school administrator leverage the laws to get the best education for the most students.

Financial resources

This is required for any effective leader in an administration to know how the money in a school district is spent, how to track it and where adjustments can be made. Knowing where funds come from and how to manage unplanned expenditures helps in the long-term planning of school programs and facilities.

Human resources

This broad topic helps the administrator understand how to manage staff. Hiring, compensating, and evaluating are all areas the administrator will need to address. Professional growth and the creation of a collaborative work environment are also areas in which the administrator will be involved.

Organizational change management

Almost all of the above topics are related to this area. How to make changes in the educational environment is an important and complex question for any educational leader. Knowing what changes will have the most positive impact and how to implement change so it will be adopted are some of the strongest skills of any successful administrator.

Leadership is always learning

Beyond the above topics, a leader is constantly evaluating their own skills and knowledge to identify the gaps. They keep current on the trends in education and review how other school systems are using them. They are open to whatever methods and resources will help the students and teachers to be successful in their education efforts. Concordia University-Portland offers a variety of programs and concentrations that focus on developing education leaders: Curriculum & Instruction Leadership concentration, Master of Education in Educational Leadership, and Doctorate of Education in any of our leadership-focused concentrations.
