Common Core Standards in a Special Needs Curriculum
Lesson Plan Examples For Common Core State Standards
Common Core State Standards are in place to provide a uniform platform for our nation’s schools to support student readiness for advanced education and career goals.
The primary objective is to prepare students for successful entrance into community and four-year college programs, and eventually the workforce, armed with excellent skills that allow them to be competitive against their counterparts around the world. By starting with pre-kindergarten classes, proponents hope to change the standard approach to education in our nation.
As educators move away from more traditional thinking about how to teach, school districts are embracing workshops and professional development strategies to help instructors revise lesson plans or write new ones to meet the needs of their student populations. The Common Core State Standards Initiative lays the groundwork by providing clear, understandable guidelines for common core lesson plans from K-12 mathematics and English Language Arts by grade-level.
School districts from Maine to California provide teachers with the necessary tools and resources to implement the guidelines of the initiative. States like California, Connecticut and New Jersey are working with educators to make the transition smoother and more productive. Many states are providing appropriate common core lesson plans and examples on their Department of Education (DOE) websites.
Lesson Plan One
The Connecticut DOE provides 19 lesson plans from pre-kindergarten through high school that educators can use in their classroom or as a model for writing their own common core lesson plans. The grade four ELA sample is designed for students who have knowledge of the basic structure of a narrative story. The teacher uses a short story or an excerpt from a longer book or a poem to prompt discussions that can lead to higher-level thinking and skill development. For struggling learners, teachers can use scaffolding or pre-reading, otherwise these should be avoided to allow students to strengthen their skills through self-motivation and personal initiative whenever possible.
Lesson Plan Two
Michelle Smith, a district curriculum supervisor in New Jersey, told NJSpotlight’s John Mooney in an article about district changes, that it is more about practicing than counting today. She praises the new initiative that places more emphasis on depth and breadth.
Common core lesson plans for mathematics that follow that way of thinking are available through the New Jersey DOE website through a LearnZillion link. Video and printed material are used together to help students grasp the concept of graphing mathematical problems for better understanding.
Lesson Plan Three
Designed for grades 6 through 12, Inspiration Visual Study Guides offer lesson plans designed to help students improve information retention and comprehension levels. The lesson plan supports activities for core standards related to college and career readiness anchor standards for reading. Teachers may assign writing projects or classroom presentation to assess student learning outcomes.

There are numerous sources for lesson plans from both commercial and community entities. Teachers can benefit from forming a coalition to share and compare grade-appropriate lesson plans within their own school districts or with community partners across their city, state or the nation.
Meanwhile, educators who are implementing the Common Core Standards are working toward providing students with more educational opportunities which will help them to become well-educated, thriving members in a highly competitive and challenging global society.< show all "Education News" articles
